Arbeia Roman Fort & Museum

Arbeia Roman Fort once served as a warehouse that supplied the thousands of soldiers based along the hostile frontier of Hadrian's Wall. With soldiers from Gaul and Iraq, tradesmen from Syria and slaves, and an emperor, from Africa, Arbeia truly was an ancient melting pot of cultures.

Today, visitors to Arbeia Roman Fort & Museum can be inspired by weapons and armour, ancient tombstones and altars, jewellery, and even the luggage seals of an emperor, as well as exploring the wonderfully reconstructed Gateway, Barrack Block and Commanding Officer's house.

The Learning Team offers a variety of facilitated workshops and free self-led resources that can bring ancient Arbeia back to life.
